On The Ropes 02:40
I can't explain it but I feel it move against my skin Keep control until it rears its ugly head again I'm not sure I can deal Just gotta push through and keep it real I backslide 'til I'm on the ropes You got me on the ropes yeah Everywhere I look I can't help see your face My energy is sapped and I can't concentrate Now I know what I'm saying seems crazy to you Makes no difference, every word I say is true I can't explain it but I feel it move against my skin Keep control until it rears its ugly head again I'm not sure I can deal There's no help, guess I'm on my own

Breaking rocks until 3am Because it’s the summer Sleep with lovers, wake with friends Because it’s the summer   God's out licking an icy-pole Because it’s the summer Ice cream headache, no no no Because it’s the summer   Maybe I’ll drive out and see the beach Because it’s the summer Nothing seems like it’s out of reach Because it’s the summer It ain't winter, autumn or spring Because it’s the summer It ain't much of anything Because it’s the summer Ooh sha-la-la Girls walk by with their skin so tanned Because it’s the summer Mango juice dripping from their hands Because it’s the summer   Jumping off the diving board Because it’s the summer Never felt so happy, so happy and bored Because it’s the summer   It’s not winter, autumn or spring Because it’s the summer No one’s wearing anything Because it’s the summer   It ain't winter, autumn or spring Because it’s the summer It ain't much of anything Because it’s the summer

50/50 02:38
'Cause our love should be fifty fifty  I ain't pullin' nothin' shifty  Uh-huh, it ain't right 'Cause our love should be fifty fifty It's not I pour the glass, and you drink the whisky  It's not spend what you want, and I'll be thrifty  Nuh-uh, it aint right They say relationships all take work  You get back what you put in  Well I don't mean to sound like a jerk  But your share's a little too thin We got ourselves a division of labour  But it ain't working for me  There's one side that it seems to favour  When it means 'you mess' and 'I clean' There's a style to which you're accustomed  And I can understand that  But I'm not your slave, we're wife and husband  And we need to have a chat When I'm cooking, you're just relaxing  And when I clean, you're gone  Ain't cool when your day's most taxing task  Turn the TV on You couldn't find the kitchen if I drew you a map  You said you'd make the bed but you took a nap  Right down the middle's where I draw the line  You ain't ducking out this time

Light A Fire 02:03
You build a wall between us and then say I'm s'posed to run to you? Your love can't start a fire, do I have to light one under you? If Mills & Boon are splitting up then what chance have we got? Your even number - love me, but your odd number - love me not Mama said, don't play with it! Your kisses don't fulfill me, they just fill me like a drink cup I only play with matches 'cause I wanna light your face up You think that you're the boss because your salary is higher You walk before you run and you will never be a flier Mama said, don't play with it! I got a heart inside me That's where the blood is Aorta pushing out Just like my love is... Mama said, don't play with it!

Faux Amis 02:49
Je t'aimais tant Tu as brisé mon coeur S'estomper à rien C'est ma chanson C'est pour le meilleur Je suis juste un chanteur Vous mon faux amis Faux faux amis (in English) I loved you so long You broke my heart Fade to nothing That's my song It's for the best I'm just a singer You my false friend False, false friend

So you got yourself a problem Can't find a way to lick it Maybe the answer Is to punch someone's ticket Gun, knife or rock Grab whatever you can see If it worked for Cain Well then it's good enough for me You can try to run the voodoo down All the way to the killing floor You can bury it deep, bottle it up But it'll always come back for more So take a chance on murder You might get away with it And if you get caught? With a face like yours? The jury is bound to acquit Six million ways to die Another million ways to kill There's plenty of reasons But I do it for the thrill It's there inside all of us Written in our blood Like a rose bush in winter Just waiting to bud

Loaded Gun 02:38
My life had stood a loaded gun Until the day you came along And now we roam These sovereign woods I never knew I could feel this good You said love me in the rain and I will... Brother, brother, brother, won't you give me a smile? When at night Our good day done I guard your head 'Til morning come To foe of yours I'm deadly foe Just cock the hammer And watch me go You said love me in the rain and I will drain you in the flood Brother, brother, brother, won't you give me a smile?

First stall - overflowing water So I headed on down the line Next stall - out of order But it's there I was given a sign Number's on the wall Number's on the wall Number's on the wall For a good time call! The number on that wall! Dialed her up and she came right over Just like she was heaven-sent then I saw a glimmer in her eyes and I knew she was hellbent My number's on the wall Number's on the wall Number's on the wall No say at all! My number's on that wall! One's pain and one's pleasure Up to you which is which She dished it out in equal measure Now I'm flapping like a landlocked fish Older now than when I started the song, I'll be older still when I'm done I invite you all to sing along, 'Cause there's a number for everyone, It's up on that wall We're all on that wall All on that wall We all gonna fall! Up offa that wall!

Of course you’ll listen to your friends ‘Cause they understand you best When I talk, you just laugh But baby, don’t grow up too fast   You’ll want it all right away Everyone does and that’s okay You won’t be told and I get that But baby, don’t grow up too fast ‘Cause it’s wasted on the young They’re all too beautiful and dumb And you can never get it back So baby please, don’t grow up too fast All these things you’re dying to do Let the world come to you Soon enough, it becomes your past Baby please, don’t grow up too fast   Forget everything that I’ve said It won’t make sense ‘til years ahead Go out there and have a blast Just baby, don’t grow up too fast   Stay naïve, it’s a gift Innocence is bliss These moments now won’t be surpassed So baby please, don’t grow up too fast

This fear Maybe it's irrational We'll all die as monkeys But we're living like animals And the thing of it is No one talks – they just scream There's no reality left It's just one crazy dream And in the meantime In between time There's always a last hurrah And this fear That no one here's responsible It's just babies and children and pets and heartthrobs All cannibals on chemicals And I still feel like I've got so much left to do And when you push your face into mine I know you feel it too And if I'm going down I'm going down swinging And if I'm gonna die I'm gonna die singing

about

This album winds me.

On the Ropes sets the tone. Luke McGrath’s gut-born voice expels the first two lines:

“I can't explain it, but I feel it move against my skin/
Keep control until it rears its ugly head again”

Claire Leske’s trumpet rings notes taut as the bell between boxing rounds, the song’s soul feel and back-of-the-beat tempo tight as Paul Weller’s stovepipes.

McGrath’s lyrics swell at the seams. Darren Atkinson and Kevin Lauro’s rhythm lends a new wave feel. This contrast - trapped pain vs laid-back new wave - pumps through the veins of this LP.

Tension in a groove. Restraint that makes you move.

Summer Frownz has echoes of Katrina and the Waves, but none of the sun.

In Light A Fire Under You, love is dangerous, tense. McGrath and Catherine James’ voices chest-bumping each other: “Aorta pushing out/Just like my love is”.

The use of French on Faux Amis hides betrayal within the lyrics. James’ breathy voice echoes “faux, faux amis” long after the song ends.

Take a Chance on Murder leads Side B. The urge to kill is “a rose bush in winter/just waiting to bud”. A cowbell rings like an alarm.

Loaded Gun follows, its title speaking for itself, its fuzz-blues solo fizzing like a fuse.

Don’t Grow Up Too Fast implores us: “Stay naïve, it’s a gift/Innocence is bliss”.

Too late.

But then. The album brings us back down with The Last Hurrah, an Irish folk track that has Atkinson playing toms like a bodhrán and McGrath ringing out: “if I’m going to die, die, die/I’m gonna die singing”.

Lights come up and bar stools are upended on tables as we leave, wondering what just happened.

Beg For Merci Beaucoup sounds like it is about to run away from us. But it doesn’t. It is coiled, constrained.

It takes my breath. Every time.
